In one episode of her informative video series “Let’s Talk About the Brain,” Dr. Layne Kalbfleisch uses marbles and twine to demonstrate the working relationship between neurons and dendrites. She also writes about the brain in a mini-blog of the same title. Dr. Layne Kalbfleisch, M.Ed., Ph.D. is a pioneer in the interdisciplinary fields of educational psychology and cognitive neuroscience. She is also recognized for her ability to communicate complicated scientific concepts to non-scientific audiences, winning the “America’s Science Idol” competition hosted by the National Science Foundation in 2010. Taking its inspiration from the popular “American Idol” television show, the competition recognizes scientists and engineers who excel at communicating with non-technical colleagues and audiences.

Dr. Kalbfleisch has practiced in multiple roles in both education and neuroscience, having been a teacher, service provider for children and young adults with learning disabilities, as well as a laboratory scientist. She is also the founder and Lab Chief of KIDLAB, which uses fMRI brain scan technology to see the brain at work, and is devoted to exploring the relationship between reasoning, talent, creativity and disability in kids and adults. Dr. Kalbfleisch’s honors include being recognized by Who’s Who in Medical Sciences Education, the McDonnell Foundation Summer Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. She is well-published on topics including autism, intelligence, neural systems of fluid reasoning, and more.
