White matter disease vs. Alzheimer’s
While Alzheimer’s disease affects cognition by shrinking the hippocampus, white matter disease hardens small blood vessels in the brain’s white matter. This limits the nutrients that can be transported into the white matter, which connects the regions of the brain that control attention, problem-solving, organizing and planning. White matter disease increases the risk for stroke, vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s.
